Facebook Poaches Apple iPhone and iPad talent

Facebook is hoping to take a slice of Apple’s enormous mobile market by producing its own smartphone. It recently hired a team of developers away from rivals Apple with the promise of well-rewarded positions developing Facebook’s first mobile device.

The team is a mixture of software and hardware developers and is estimated to be comprised of half a dozen top engineers. 2013 is the rumoured release date of the fabled ‘Facebook phone’, and the year ahead is sure to be a game changer as big mobile network broadband offers are also announced worldwide.

Facebook was previously rumoured to be releasing a product in collaboration with HTC, although no actual product ever materialised from that joint venture. Facebook are said to be nervous that without a mobile phone product of their own, they risk becoming just another app. It’s widely noted that Facebook makes no advertising money on its mobile app. After the IPO and stock market floatation Facebook desperately needs to prove that it can make money.

Facebook has also bought the Opera browser, which further suggests that its tooling up a Facebook-made mobile and or tablet device. A fast and secure browser that supports the existing iPad and iPhone mobile website infrastructure is needed to secure Facebook’s place in the mobile market. This switch in browser demand has revived the browser market, with other big name players once again directing their efforts towards the browser market.

Facebook may succeed in living up to its incredible valuation if it can push itself into the mobile market proper. Monetisation is the key issue, and it currently lags behind other large companies in making money from mobile. We’re sure to find out in 2013 whether Facebook is still an innovator or whether it has begun to slip into steady decline.
